What to eat to improve the skin
October 13, 2023
Skin health requires numerous measures and many 'good habits'. Of course, this also includes a healthy and balanced diet. Diet can ensure an adequate supply of nutrients and regenerating substances for the skin and thus contribute significantly to making the skin firmer and more elastic.
What are good foods for skin?
Foods and substances that benefit the skin are those that moisturize the skin and promote tissue regeneration and elasticity to slow the aging process.
To improve your skin, it is first essential to drink plenty of water (at least a liter and a half a day) and supplement your diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables. The skin tissues also require certain vitamins that can be obtained through the diet and are crucial to maintaining the physical and functional properties of the skin.
Vitamin C for collagen production and Vitamin E for amino acids
Peppers, tomatoes, currants, strawberries, citrus fruits (oranges and lemons), kiwi and broccoli, as well as salmon, potatoes and turkey meat are rich in vitamin C. The latter plays a crucial role in skin health as it is directly involved in the collagen production process, which is necessary for the strength and elasticity of the tissue is responsible.
Another group of skin-friendly foods are orange fruits (peaches, apricots, persimmons, mangoes and melons) along with carrots, which contain high amounts of beta-carotene. This pigment is converted into vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A acts primarily as an antioxidant and has an anti-aging effect, preventing signs of aging, especially wrinkles and dark spots.
Finally, foods rich in vitamin E (nuts, oily seeds and extra virgin olive oil) provide the necessary amino acids, which are also found in fish and legumes.
What are the foods that should be avoided?
Certain types of foods can have negative effects on the skin. In general, it is advisable to avoid or limit the consumption of products such as processed foods, sweets (and generally foods with a high glycemic index), fried foods, bread and pasta.
In particular, excessive consumption of bread and pasta, as well as carbonated drinks and fried foods, can worsen cellulite and acne. Industrial snacks such as French fries are very acidic due to their high saturated fat content and can trigger cell inflammation. Sweets, in turn, due to their high glycemic index, initiate a process called glycation, which stiffens collagen fibers and promotes the formation of wrinkles. Finally, sausage products are not recommended due to their high sodium content, as they can promote water retention.
