Pineapple, benefits, and properties
October 16, 2023
Originally from South America, the pineapple is widespread and consumed all over the world (it is the best-selling canned fruit of all), not only for its characteristic slightly sweet and sour taste, but also for its various beneficial properties.
What does pineapple contain?
The beneficial effects of pineapple are due to the chemical composition of the fruit, which provides an excellent source of magnesium, vitamin C and potassium. The pulp also contains bromelain (although higher concentrations are present in the stem), an enzyme that catalyzes the process of protein breakdown. The other substances contained in pineapple are water, vitamins B and C, proteins, iron, phosphorus, beta-carotene and calcium. The combination of citric acid and sugar gives the fruit its characteristic taste, which is slightly sweet with a subtle sour aftertaste.
What are the beneficial properties of pineapple?
Appropriate consumption of pineapple can provide a variety of beneficial effects while maintaining a moderate calorie content (approximately 40 calories per 100g), making it suitable for calorie-restricted diets. It is recommended to eat them fresh and raw, consuming about 100 grams a day to benefit from the best properties of the fruit. Cooking reduces the effectiveness of bromelain.
Pineapple has a diuretic and antioxidant effect. It is therefore particularly suitable for combating water retention, stimulating diuresis and combating high blood pressure at the same time.
In addition, it helps to slow down skin aging (with an anti-aging effect against wrinkles) and bone aging, promotes digestion (thanks to the action of bromelain), strengthens nails and teeth, fights the formation of cellulite and tones muscles, especially when combined with intense and regular physical activity. Finally, pineapple also has anti-inflammatory properties that make it effective against coughs and colds, especially in winter.
Any contraindications
In general, the consumption of pineapple has no contraindications, except for people who are allergic, suffer from stomach ulcers or are undergoing anticoagulant therapy. In such cases, pineapple-based products are generally not recommended.
