Crow's Feet: What Actually Works and What's Overrated

Crow's feet are almost always the first wrinkles you notice, and they arrive earlier than you expect. Not because the skin around the eyes ages faster than the rest of the face, but because two things overlap there that never come together anywhere else on the body: the thinnest skin you have, and a muscle that contracts tens of thousands of times a day without you ever noticing.
In this guide you'll find the distinction almost nobody explains — the one that completely changes what you can expect from a cream — along with an honest ranking of topical ingredients based on how well documented they actually are. Including the reason why one of the most repeated pieces of advice online, face yoga around the eyes, works against you on crow's feet specifically.
What crow's feet actually are
They're the lines that fan out from the outer corner of the eye towards the temple, and they take their name from the resemblance to a bird's footprint. The muscle responsible is the orbicularis oculi, the ring of muscle that surrounds the eye socket and contracts every time you smile, squint against the sun, or simply blink.
Why the eye area gives way first
The skin of the eyelid and the area around the eye is the thinnest on the body: around half a millimetre, against two millimetres and more in other areas of the face. It has fewer sebaceous glands, so it holds water less well, and it sits on scarcer supporting tissue. Running across that fragile structure is a muscle that never stops working: we're estimated to blink more than 15,000 times a day.
No other area of the body combines skin this thin with mechanical stress this frequent. That's why crow's feet appear before forehead lines or the nasolabial fold.
Dynamic and static wrinkles: the distinction that changes everything
This is the part worth understanding properly, because everything a cream can and cannot do follows from it.
A dynamic wrinkle exists only while the muscle is contracting. You smile, the fold appears; your face relaxes, the fold disappears. No substance applied to the skin stops a muscle from contracting — that's why botulinum toxin works on this type of wrinkle and creams don't. It isn't a question of formulation or price: they act on different levels entirely.
A static wrinkle, on the other hand, stays there even when your face is at rest. It forms when the dynamic fold is repeated for years on skin that has meanwhile lost collagen, elastin and the ability to snap back into place. Here topicals genuinely have a say, because they work on exactly that: the quality of the skin.
Crow's feet, in most cases, are both things at once: a dynamic component you see when you smile, and a static one that stays. A cream only acts on the second. Anyone promising to erase them completely either doesn't know the difference or is hoping you don't.
Why they appear, and what speeds them up
The sun, which outweighs everything else
Photoageing is by far the leading modifiable factor. Ultraviolet radiation activates matrix metalloproteinases, enzymes that degrade collagen, and reduces the ability of fibroblasts to rebuild it. Around the eyes there's an added behavioural problem: when the light is strong and you're not wearing sunglasses, you squint. Every squint is one more contraction of the orbicularis.
In this area, sunglasses are worth as much as your cream: they block the rays and they stop you contracting the muscle. It's the most obvious piece of advice and the most underrated.
Smoking and oxidative stress
Smoking works on two fronts: it generates free radicals that damage collagen fibres, and it reduces cutaneous microcirculation, and with it the supply of oxygen and nutrients. On top of that comes the repeated gesture of narrowing your eyes against the rising smoke.
Sleep, dehydration and what you see in the morning
Sleeping badly doesn't create wrinkles, but it worsens everything that makes them visible: puffiness, fluid retention, dull colour. When they start to appear
The dynamic component is visible from your twenties in anyone with a very expressive face: if you smile a lot, the folds show up early. The static component usually settles in between 30 and 40, earlier in fair, thin skin, later in thicker skin richer in melanin.
One practical point: the only moment when prevention really has an impact is before the static component has consolidated. After that, you're working on softening, not erasing. Starting to protect the eye area at twenty-five isn't premature — it's the only window in which the return on investment is high.
What works topically, in order of evidence
This is where most articles list five or six ingredients as if they were equivalent. They aren't. Some have clinical trials published in dermatology journals; others have research run by the people selling them, on a handful of participants and over a few weeks.
Retinoids — the strongest evidence
This is the only family of topical actives with solid documentation on skin remodelling. The study by Kafi and colleagues published in Archives of Dermatology (PMID 17515510) tested retinol at 0.4% against vehicle on naturally aged skin, applied three times a week for up to 24 weeks, and found a significant improvement in fine wrinkles.
Retinol stimulates collagen synthesis and speeds up cell turnover. Around the eyes, though, it needs care: this is the most reactive area of the face, and concentrations designed for the cheeks can cause irritation, flaking and — the paradox — a temporary worsening in appearance. Start at a low concentration, on alternate evenings, and always apply it over a moisturising base.
Vitamin C
It's an essential cofactor for the enzymes that stabilise collagen: without vitamin C, collagen doesn't assemble properly. The double-blind study by Humbert in Experimental Dermatology (PMID 12823436) assessed topical ascorbic acid against placebo on photoaged skin, with improvements measured on both clinical and ultrastructural parameters. Vitamin C's real-world problem is stability: L-ascorbic acid oxidises quickly on contact with air and light. If your serum has turned amber, it has stopped working.
Niacinamide
Less discussed, but interesting precisely on this area: a split-face study by Majewski (PMID 36226831) assessed a niacinamide-based formulation specifically on periorbital wrinkles, using image analysis. It's also one of the best-tolerated actives around the eyes, which on an area this reactive counts as much as raw potency.
The overrated actives (and why they are)
Argireline-type peptides
Argireline is sold as "botox in a cream", and that reputation traces back to a 2002 study by Blanes-Mira (PMID 18498523) reporting a reduction in wrinkle depth of around 30%. It's worth looking at how it was built: very few participants, thirty days, no adequate control arm. A later paper by Wang (PMID 23464592) revisited the topic with positive results but equally light methodology.
Then there's a physical obstacle: for a peptide to interfere with neuromuscular transmission it has to reach the junction, and a molecule that size crosses the stratum corneum with great difficulty. It isn't a useless ingredient — but the distance between what the marketing promises and what the data show is wide.
Topical hyaluronic acid
It works, just not for the reason you think. Hyaluronic acid applied to the skin draws in and holds water in the surface layer: the area hydrates, smooths out, the fine line shows less. The review by Bravo in Dermatologic Therapy (PMID 36200921) documents these effects on hydration and skin quality well.
It's a real effect, but a surface-level and reversible one: you aren't remodelling anything, you're temporarily plumping. Stop, and within a few days you're back where you started. Injected hyaluronic acid is a different category of intervention altogether. Why face yoga around the eyes works against you
Face yoga is one of the most widespread pieces of advice online, and on the face in general it has some basis. The study by Alam published in JAMA Dermatology (PMID 29299598) followed women aged 40 to 65 through twenty weeks of facial exercises and found an improvement in cheek fullness. The systematic review by Van Borsel (PMID 24327764) is more cautious and judges the overall evidence still weak.
But with crow's feet the point is different, and it's mechanical. If the cause is repeated contraction of the orbicularis, a protocol that has you voluntarily contract that same muscle is adding repetitions of the exact movement that creates the fold. On the cheeks, the reasoning about muscle tone holds up; around the eyes, it doesn't.
It's one of those cases where advice that is correct for one area of the face becomes counterproductive when extended to another. If you want to do something with your hands in this area, a light drainage massage — which acts on fluid retention — makes far more sense than a contraction exercise.
The approach from the inside
Skin is an organ, and like every organ it works with what reaches it through the blood. Around the eyes, where topicals hit structural limits, internal support counts for more than it does elsewhere.
Hydrolysed collagen
This is the supplement with the most data on skin. The meta-analyses by de Miranda in the International Journal of Dermatology (PMID 33742704) and the more recent one by Myung in the American Journal of Medicine (PMID 40324552) converge on significant improvements in skin hydration and elasticity compared with placebo. The effects are modest in absolute terms, but consistent across different studies — which in supplement research is not a given.

Antioxidants
If the main damage is oxidative and light-induced, it makes sense to work on the defences too. The meta-analysis by Zhou in Nutrients (PMID 34578794) assessed astaxanthin on human skin ageing, with favourable results on wrinkles and elasticity.
On Moringa oleifera, cosmetic research is more recent: the review by Garg (PMID 38055069) gathers the phytochemical composition and the dermatological applications, while the work by Hengpratom (PMID 40722871) shows that the leaf extract reduces UVB-induced photo-oxidative damage — in cultured keratinocytes, so a laboratory finding, not a clinical trial. We say so because the difference matters.
We may as well be clear. On the dynamic component of crow's feet, botulinum toxin is the only thing that genuinely works, because it's the only one acting on the muscle. It lasts three to four months, it has to be repeated, and it's a medical procedure.
What nobody tells you is that the two approaches aren't in competition: botox suspends the contraction, but it doesn't improve the quality of the skin sitting over the muscle. If the static component is already there, after treatment the fold softens but the texture stays exactly as it was. Frequently asked questions
Can crow's feet be prevented?
The static component largely can be, and the two measures that matter most are also the simplest: daily sun protection around the eyes, and sunglasses, which as well as screening the rays stop you squinting. The dynamic component depends on how expressive your face is and can't be prevented, short of giving up smiling — which isn't advice we'd give.
Can a cream remove crow's feet that are already there?
It can soften the static part, the one you see with your face at rest, by improving hydration, density and skin quality. It cannot remove the fold that appears when you smile, because that depends on a muscle contracting and no substance applied to the skin prevents it. Anyone promising complete erasure is selling an expectation the product cannot meet.
Can retinol be used around the eyes?
Yes, but carefully: this is the thinnest and most reactive area of the face. Start at low concentrations, two or three evenings a week, applying it over a moisturiser that acts as a buffer. If redness or flaking appear, space the applications out rather than pushing through. Retinoids should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Do sunglasses really help?
They're one of the most effective tools for this specific area, and they act on two fronts at once: they block the ultraviolet radiation that degrades collagen, and they stop you contracting the orbicularis to shield yourself from the light. Choose a pair with certified UV protection: a dark lens without a filter dilates the pupil and is worse than wearing nothing.
Does face yoga work on crow's feet?
On the face in general there's preliminary data on tone and cheek fullness, but the available systematic review judges the evidence still weak. Around the eyes the logic flips: crow's feet come from repeated contraction of the orbicularis muscle, so exercises that contract it voluntarily are adding repetitions to the cause. On this area a light drainage massage makes more sense.
Is it better to work from the outside or from the inside?
On this area it's worth doing both, because topicals have a structural limit: the skin around the eyes is thin and reactive, and it doesn't tolerate the concentrations of actives used elsewhere.
